Bacterial & Fungal
Infection Treatment

Skin offers resistance to infection by bacteria and fungi, but sometimes infections do occur. As with all things in dermatology, the key to overcoming the infections that do occur is customized treatment based on accurate diagnosis.

Bacterial & Fungal Infection Treatment

Bacterial infections of the skin include cellulitis, impetigo, bacterial folliculitis, and various Staph infections including Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Cellulitis is a bacterial infection deeper inside skin tissue while impetigo defines a crusty oozing infection of the skin surface. Bacterial folliculitis occurs around hair follicles and looks similar to acne. MRSA is a form of Staph bacteria infection that may require special antibiotic therapy. The good news is that bacterial skin infections respond readily to proper evaluation and treatment.

Skin is the front line defense against all types of germs – bacteria and fungi in particular.

Fungal skin infections are common in adolescents and adults. Dermatophyte fungus infects hair, skin, and nails and is most commonly found on feet and in the groin. It typically responds well to oral or topical antifungal medicines, especially if hair or nails are involved. Yeast and yeast-like organisms may also cause skin disorders. Tinea versicolor is caused by a yeast-like organism that tends to involve the upper torso of athletic individuals, resulting in off-color velvety patches. Intertrigo is another common yeast condition that occurs in moist thick skin folds when air-drying is impaired. Yeast related skin conditions respond well to tailored anti-yeast therapy.

Bacterial and fungal skin infections are usually easy to diagnose and treat. At Medford Derm, we’re familiar with managing and treating all manner of bacterial and fungal skin infections in order to return you – and your skin – to better health.
